Jimmy :

The whole presidential election was a big farce. Reports suggest widespread cheating and from the interior ministry and voter suppression at some polling stations. Official, government tied, news agencies announced the results hours before the vote count began. It appears that the outcome of this election was determined months in advance behind closed doors. Both Reformist candidates had promised lessening of restrictions on women. Ahmadinejad and hardliners will now claim they have a mandate and could make things even worse. Do our governments in Europe and North America have a responsiblity to put pressure on Iran not to implement new repressive measures? What should Hillary’s response be?

To be honest I disapprove of Iran’s treatment of women as much as anyone else, but I’m glad he won it for one reason: He’s one of the few world leaders to publicly denounce America’s neo con quest for worldwide hegemony and their support for Israel’s oppressive treatment of the Palestinians. As long as he’s in power, the fantasy neo cons have that America is almighty and that no one can oppose it is unattainable.

It’s a tradeoff, yes, but I believe that American military imperialism has reached a very dangerous level and even though Iran can’t do anything, it’s the fact that they publicly refuse to acknowledge that America is superior to them (which it isn’t).

The people in Iran need to fix their own country, the women need to stand up for their rights. It will take every woman in Iran to unite together and get things done.
